Opening Event: G7 Summit - Implications for Transatlantic Climate Policy

The opening event of the Transatlantic Climate Bridge Conference 2022 reflected on the recently-concluded G7 Summit and broke down its implications for climate policy cooperation across the Atlantic. The event kicked off with introductory remarks from government representatives of the three TCB countries.

These keynote speakers addressed the most pressing questions present in transatlantic climate relations today: What do the outcomes of the G7 summit mean for transatlantic climate policy development? What opportunities does the current political climate present for transatlantic climate cooperation? How important is robust transatlantic cooperation on climate goals such as achieving a net zero economy, and on the issue of energy security in an ever-changing geopolitical context? To what extent do the decisions made at international fora such as the G7 summit, EU Council negotiations, or global climate conferences, trickle down into all levels of transatlantic government and society?

In the second part of this event, we heard from journalists involved in the field of transatlantic climate relations in a panel discussion hosted by adelphi, as well as the news provider Clean Energy Wire, which provides well-researched background on German energy and climate policy and supports international journalists. This engaging, live discussion of the most pertinent transatlantic climate issues in light of G7 outcomes, allowed us to ask questions directly to journalists with their finger on the pulse of transatlantic climate developments.
