The traffic light coalition had imagined the premiere differently. Since February 24, 2022, the war in Ukraine, which violates international law, and the associated upheavals in energy supply and prices have changed the prioritization and focus of the German government’s climate agenda. Emergency plans for gas or the creation of aid packages to cushion social and economic hardship have been the focus ever since. The agonizing but necessary search for new gas suppliers is tying up important resources and preventing the rapid development of legislation to use new policies and instruments designed to catalyze the transformation. In particular, the imponderables of gas, which was intended as a bridge for industrial transformation,

The uncertain energy supply and increased energy costs are making industry less competitive and endangering the value chains in Germany and Europe. Ammonia production has almost come to a standstill. The consequence of this is that individual products - such as AdBlue, an important component in the exhaust gas treatment of diesel vehicles - can no longer be manufactured without loss. We see another example with the aluminum manufacturers: They are not currently signing any new contracts because the price of electricity in Germany is many times higher than in other regions of the world.

Furthermore, the rate at which the climate is warming is increasing dramatically. Drought and heat are increasing the pressure to act towards a climate-neutral industry. Everyone involved is running out of time. It is therefore necessary for politicians, industry and society to close ranks as soon as possible.

Against this background and after a year of the traffic light coalition, the event is on the one hand about taking stock of what has been achieved. Equally important, however, is the future path of transformation:

  • What political levers need to be adjusted or set up now?
  • Which vulnerabilities have not or only insufficiently been identified?
  • What about the readiness of the industry for the transformation process?
  • What form of cooperation between politics, industry and society is required to enable an efficient climate policy and to align it with competitiveness?

We would like to discuss these and other questions with high-ranking representatives from politics, science and industry at this public evening event, which Agora Industrie is organizing in cooperation with the Climate Economy Foundation. Afterwards we invite you to a reception.
